What Are Share Certificates?
Members hold a share of the credit union so that’s why we use the term “Share Certificate.”
A Share Certificate is a type of savings account offered by credit unions that typically offers higher interest rates than regular savings accounts. Here’s how it works in plain English:
- Deposit: You deposit a certain amount of money into the share certificate account.
- Fixed Term: You agree to leave the money in the account for a specific period, ranging from a few months to several years.
- Dividends: The credit union pays you dividends on your money, usually at a higher rate than a regular savings account.
- Maturity: At the end of the term (maturity), you can withdraw your initial deposit plus the interest earned.
If you withdraw the money before the term ends, you have to pay a penalty. Share certificates are a safe way to save money and earn more interest compared to standard savings accounts.
Why choose media credit union?
Member Owned: As a not-for-profit organization, any extra money made is returned to members through better rates on loans and savings, lower fees, or additional services.
Community Focused: We focus on serving the financial needs of our local communities, which benefits the community we live in. Members help each other financially, creating a supportive and collaborative environment.
